US land managers in Utah to tackle wild horse population

SALT LAKE CITY — Federal land managers have cleared the way for population control measures for the wild horses in the Onaqui Mountains southwest of Salt Lake City.

The Bureau of Land Management said Friday those measures will include fertility control vaccines and the gather and removal of excess horses from the area.

Officials said chronic overpopulation is damaging to the long-term health of wild horse herds, other wildlife and the land on which they all depend. Continue Reading (will take you to the news site)

Another Reason to STEP UP FOR HORSES
Wild horses have long been an evocative symbol of the American West. When wild horses and burros were threatened with extinction nearly 50 years ago, Congress rode to the rescue with a law providing broad protections.
Horse numbers have soared, however, along with government costs to manage the herds. And the animals increasingly compete with privately owned livestock for food and water on public lands—a conflict worsened by climate change. There is broad agreement that something has to give.Even so, animal welfare groups have bristled at measures taken and being considered by the Bureau of Land Management, the branch of the Interior Department that oversees an immense swath of western public lands. The bureau recently eased limits on sales of captured horses to private parties, raising fears about the animals possibly being funneled to slaughterhouses to become food for pets and people. And although the BLM is currently barred from killing horses to control their numbers, the agency raised euthanasia as an option in a recent report to Congress.  Read More……………

Utah wild horses ran into barbed wire during aerial roundup; four animals with pre-existing injuries were euthanized

Another BLM Roundup Gone Wrong
PLEASE STEP UP FOR HORSES NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!

A federal wild horse roundup in Utah’s West Desert is drawing fire after four injured horses were put down, and photos surfaced showing helicopter wranglers swooping down as some of the galloping animals ran into barbed wire fences.

Photos shot Monday by an observer affiliated with the American Wild Horse Campaign depict one horse tumbling hard, hooves in the air, after striking a fence as a chopper hazed a band toward a trap, according to the photographer, Steve Paige.

“We call on the [Bureau of Land Management] to suspend the roundup underway currently in Utah by grounding the helicopters while an investigation is undertaken of the animal welfare violations documented by our observer,” said Suzanne Roy, executive director of the American Wild Horse Campaign. “Nearly hitting wild horses with helicopters, repeatedly causing them to crash into barbed wire, and stampeding horses in a manner that leaves foals behind is unconscionable.”

Triple B Roundup Staticics -1389 Wild Horses Captured. 28 Dead

The Triple B roundup just completed last month; 1389 wild horses were captured and 28 died. A fertility control application that would have allowed around 500 wild horses to return home was cancelled, abruptly, by BLM with no court ruling, no change in law, no public input. The issues run much deeper than the 28 deaths. Politics rule our western ranges. Politics are destroying our western landscape and threaten our wild horses.

Horse Abuse? What do You Think?

I’ve never been a fan of “laying horses down” as I fail to see the point. People say it develops trust but the day I see horse lay down another horse I will not be convinced. So when I was sent this video I was horrified. This horse is not trusting its handler, looks scared and is not at all enjoying this experience. Horse Abuse? I think so. What do you think? By the way, I have no idea who this is – probably someone who calls themselves a horse trainer. I love the text that goes with the video “Do not try this at home.” Unbelievable!
