Who Am I?
It’s a big question and one that is not so easy to answer. For starters I am Julia Hyde, the founder of Canham Farm Horse Rescue. I’m a lifelong animal lover who cannot tolerate injustice – whether it’s directed at animals or humans. I am outspoken and am not afraid to speak out about what I perceive to be unkind, bigoted, cruel and abusive whether verbally or physically.
My love of animals began at an early age and my dream then was to become a veterinarian. That didn’t happen so I became a registered nurse. I moved to the United States in 1994 and that’s when I began my journey with horses, first with so called “Natural Horsemanship”. At that time I truly thought that natural horsemanship was doing the right thing by horses but I slowly began to move away from what I perceived to be its abusive nature. So began my journey into looking for better ways to train horses without coersion. It’s been quite the journey and I haven’t reached my desination yet, but I do know there is a better way. I call in Consent, Trust, Connection™.
Given my dive into alternative ways of training horses it made sense that I should concentrate my efforts on horses that have suffered in the hands of humans, intentionally and unintentionally. Hence, in 2017 Canham Farm Horse Rescue Inc; a registered non-profit, was born. I continue to research kinder more compassionate ways to help horses overcome trauma in addition to helping horse lovers, who are looking for a different approach to training, acheive a special relationship with all horses.
