About Our Founder

Julia Hyde, Founder of Canham Farm Horse Rescue Inc

Julia Hyde is the CEO of Canham Farm Horse Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and protecting horses from abuse, neglect and slaughter. Originally from the UK, Julia moved to the United States in 1995, bringing with her a lifelong passion for horses and a deep commitment to their welfare. Her equestrian journey began early—by 18, she was a rider at a UK training stable, where her love for horses only grew stronger.

Julia’s professional background spans nursing, journalism, and marketing, each adding depth to her compassionate, communicative approach to horse care and advocacy. As a registered nurse, she brings a deep understanding of physical and emotional healing; as a journalist and marketer, she knows how to give voice to the voiceless—especially horses.

At the heart of Julia’s philosophy is a belief in consent, trust, and true connection between horse and human. She is always searching for kinder, gentler ways to train horses—not as tools, but as companions. Her work centers on listening to the horse, allowing them choice and agency in their interactions. For Julia, a horse’s happiness and willingness are the foundation for building trust, partnership, and lifelong friendship.

Julia is also a certified Mindfulness Coach and is available for coaching sessions and consultations with equines, sharing her insights on ethical horse training, rescue, relationship-based horsemanship and the power of the herd.

A Note From Julia

My love of animals began at an early age and my dream then was to become a veterinarian. That didn’t happen so I became a registered nurse. I moved to the United States in 1994 and that’s when I began my journey with horses, first with so called “Natural Horsemanship”. At that time I truly thought that natural horsemanship was doing the right thing by horses but I slowly began to move away from what I perceived to be its abusive nature. So began my journey into looking for better ways to train horses without coersion. It’s been quite the journey and I haven’t reached my desination yet, but I do know there is a better way. I call in Consent, Trust, Connection™.

Given my dive into alternative ways of training horses it made sense that I should concentrate my efforts on horses that have suffered in the hands of humans, intentionally and unintentionally. Hence, in 2017 Canham Farm Horse Rescue Inc; a registered non-profit, was born. I continue to research kinder more compassionate ways to help horses overcome trauma in addition to helping horse lovers, who are looking for a different approach to training and acheive a special relationship with all horses.
